Job Description

The Safety Officer will report directly to the Director: Safety & Compliance and ensure that the Company complies with the applicable Health & Safety Laws as set out by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA). The Safety Officer will assist with conducting effective analysis of all aviation safety risks and will continually improve safety performance through processes that ensure that relevant safety action is effectively taken.

Responsibilities & Duties

(Including but are not limited to the below)

  • Co-ordinate the organisation’s aviation safety programme and all related safety matters
  • Identify & Investigate hazards, incidents and accidents
  • Ensure Compliance with legal and regulatory requirements as well as the Organisation’s Policies and Procedures
  • Assist with the development of security policies, protocols & procedures, planning of security operations, reporting and incident investigation
  • Conduct relevant administrative duties, safety training sessions and case study development
  • Ensure team collaboration/contribution
  • Build and maintain healthy and sustainable relationships with stakeholders, both internally and externally
  • Continuous development of own expertise to drive personal growth

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 Certificate (Essential)
  • Holding a valid RPC
  • Completed an approved safety management system (SMS) course
  • Qualification in UAS specific training
  • QMS advantageous
  • Qualification in accident investigation advantageous
  • Instructors rating advantageous

Experience

  • Experience working in aviation safety roles (unmanned/ manned aviation)
  • Minimum 1 year’ work experience with UAS Operations
  • Experience in aviation accident/incident (desirable)
  • Aviation experience in risk assessment and management  
  • Broad aviation technical knowledge

Job Knowledge & Skills

  • Proficiency in English
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in UAS Technology, software & data analysis
  • Knowledge of safety management systems (SMS) and shall have successfully completed an approved training course in aviation safety management.
  • An understanding of risk management principles and techniques to support the SMS.
  • Sound knowledge of aviation regulatory frameworks, including ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPS) and relevant civil aviation regulations.
  • The ability to be firm in conviction, promote a “just and fair culture” and yet advance an open and non-punitive atmosphere for reporting.
  • Well-developed communication skills and demonstrated interpersonal skills of a high order, with the ability to liaise with a variety of individuals and organizational representatives, including those from differing cultural backgrounds.

  • Ability to effectively communicate safety protocols, procedures, and concerns to a wide range of stakeholders, including operators, management, and regulatory bodies.
  • Meticulous attention to detail is crucial in identifying potential safety issues and ensuring compliance with safety standards
  • Strong problem-solving abilities to address and resolve safety-related challenges quickly and effectively.   
  • Must be willing to travel to all RocketDNA sites around South Africa
